Anger against the regime will doubtless persist, but what has happened may well be perceived by the people of Iran as a form of betrayal by Trump and the US.

Western media personalities who visited Iran this week have parroted the regime’s claims that foreign-backed rioters are behind the recent unrest.

In a region where threats are declared openly and acted upon decisively, moral symmetry is not restraint. It is an invitation.

There is a crucial fact that Western observers consistently forget: The worst violence against Iranian protesters has always occurred under so-called “reformist” governments. 

Pahlavi said that there were signs that the Iranian government was on the brink of collapse and that an attack could weaken it or accelerate its fall.
