At a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday for Tel Aviv’s new courthouse, Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch said that it was right that the court should stand at the heart of the city’s cultural district.“It will stand here as a symbol of the court’s important place at the cultural, spiritual and social center,” said Beinisch.An extension of the existing courthouse on Weizmann Street in central Tel Aviv, the new building is scheduled to be ready in 2014 and will cost around NIS 300 million.Architects Amnon Rechter have designed the courthouse from environmentally friendly materials.When it is complete, the new structure will provide approximately 20,000 sq.m.of much-needed space to the existing court facilities. Most of the extra space has been earmarked for district court proceedings, but the magistrate’s court will also use part of the new building.The youth court will be transferred to an existing court building on Shocken Street in south Tel Aviv.
