Galant: Hamas making trouble on Gaza border out of desperation

Addressing the ongoing protests and rioting crisis on the Gaza border, Construction and Housing Minister Yoav Galant said on Sunday that Hamas “is in trouble.” “It does not have operational solutions, so it is cynically using Palestinian citizens to create provocations and to grab the attention of the international community,” the former IDF southern commander told the Jerusalem Post Conference in New York.Regarding Iran, Galant echoed the message of many Israeli ministers, saying, “I am convinced that US persistence will get Iran to rethink its path.”He praised US President Donald Trump as Israel’s “closest ally” who “adopted a different approach” from the Obama administration “and labeled the nuclear deal a very bad deal.”Absent confronting Iran with toughness, he said that “a nuclear Iran would endanger the whole world and Israel in particular.”Galant said that overall Israel has achieved one of the most stable periods of quiet from any major military danger, but was disturbed by Iran’s presence in Syria.“There is a dangerous asymmetric situation in which Israel is exposed to Iran, but Iran is far away” and could potentially develop weapons of mass destruction without Israel having quick and easy access to dealing with any such weapons.Galant also warned that in the midst of the quiet, “terrorists do not rest. All over the country, in cities and in villages, there are attempts to perpetrate terrorist attacks.”
