Two Border Police officers are in light condition after being stabbed in the head and upper body with a screwdriver by a Palestinian near the Austrian Hospice in Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday afternoon. While details of the attack remain unclear, Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the incident took place shortly before 1 p.m. Magen David Adom paramedics treated both officers at the scene, before transferring them to the capital’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center. The unidentified suspect is from the West Bank and was shot by responding officers, Rosenfeld said. The terrorist was also treated at the scene before being rushed to Hadassah- University Medical Center in Ein Kerem in critical condition.“Police officers responded to the attack quickly and shot the terrorist,” Rosenfeld said.He did not confirm reports that a 12-year-old sustained a light head wound during the attack, and has been hospitalized.Police cordoned off the scene, searched for other suspects and have opened an investigation, Rosenfeld said.Jerusalem’s Old City was a flashpoint area during the so-called “stabbing intifada,” from September of last year through much of this year.Last month, a knife-wielding Palestinian man in his late 40s was shot dead while attempting to stab a private security guard at the Kalandiya Crossing checkpoint, between Jerusalem and Ramallah.A Palestinian woman was arrested at the same checkpoint on Tuesday after charging officers with a knife.Rosenfeld said police continue to actively patrol the capital, with an emphasis on the Old City as thousands of Christians are expected for Christmas.
