Police are in search of a suspect who stabbed another man on Thursday in Ashdod. The victim, 40, is in moderate condition, according to Magen David Adom.
A police statement said that initial findings suggest that a religious Jewish man stabbed an Arab in what was initially thought to be a terror attack, however the circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet confirmed. There is also the possibility that the attack was criminal in nature, and not related to nationalistic motivations.
Army Radio reported that the suspect heard the man speaking Arabic, and then committed the attack.
The victim was said to be a street peddler (al tizahen) - a person who sells his wares on a cart roving the streets, a common but declining trade in Israel.
Earlier on Thursday, a Beduin man was caught after stealing a handgun from a security guard at a Beersheba shopping mall. The weapon was recovered by police after a 30 minute search.
