Israel carries out heavy shelling in Lebanon
Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman called Wednesday for a “harsh and disproportionate” response to a multi-pronged Hezbollah attack that injured seven IDF soldiers on Wednesday.
“Israel has to change the policy by which it responds to missile attacks against its sovereign territory,” Liberman said and added “it must do so harshly, and disproportionately.”
He spoke during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing. China or the US would respond in such a disproportionate manner if it was their sovereign territory that was being attacked, Liberman said.
Israel expects its allies to support a harsh response, Liberman told Wang. He added that countries around the world had to adopt a harsh and severe policy with regard to terrorism that did not allow for the kind of provocation that Israel experienced on Wednesday from Hezbollah.
Terrorist organizations throughout the globe operate under different names, but their objectives are the same, when it comes to attacks in the Middle East and against Western targets. The IDF carried out artillery and air strikes against a number of Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon following an anti-tank missile attack against an IDF vehicle and a number of mortar strikes on Israeli communities near the border.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz arrived at the Northern Command Wednesday and held a special evaluation with Northern Commander Maj.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi and additional senior officers.
