Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème was performed last month by the Israeli Opera less than four years after the previous production. La bohème opened the 2017/18 season and is directed by Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera and conducted by Francesco Cilluffo. With excellent soloists from Israel and Europe who sang with grace, passion and emotions, this opera was a pleasure. I found the second act to be the most impressive, with a colorful ambience of the Latin Quarter – cheerful and full of life – setting the stage for wining down all the way to the sad end, with a touching performance.

The upcoming opera to be premiered January 4th, 2018 is Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Benjamin Britten, directed by Ido Ricklin and conducted by Daniel Cohen. The production is an expression of emotion to the Hollywood golden era and the dreams industry. It’s a story of four young people tied to each other with complex love ties, fairies and the forest creatures near Athens. This opera will be starring Israeli and British soloists, it will be sung in English with English and Hebrew surtitles.
Following that, the season will continue with Don Giovanni, Don Carlo, Dido and Aeneas, the Tale of Tsar Saltan, and lastly, Carmen.
When in the Israeli Opera House, look around for the Opera Art displayed in the atrium. Seven works of seven leading Israeli artists are giving a personal interpretation to the seven operas to be staged in the 2017/18 opera season that are presented to the audience.
