The demand in Israel and around the world for products that filter or purify the air we breathe in closed spaces has increased significantly with the long visit of the Corona epidemic.
For two years, on and off, the mask on our face was the permanent accessory that we didn't allow ourselves to go around without and since the removal of the obligation to wear it, products have appeared that promise to "clean" the air of bacteria (not to mention epidemics), in the hope that we won't have to go back to it. In the case of products of this type, the manufacturers promise that you won't have to do anything except buy one, place it in a strategic place in the space and clean filters rarely, a bit like servicing an air conditioner.
Leave the role of air filtration to the mast. And the rising star we chose to test from this category is Dyson's Pure Cool Hot +cool Formaldehyde HP09 air filter. The brand is known for the quality of the vacuum cleaners it produces, we know its capabilities in vacuuming carpets, floors, walls and furniture, but what about the bacteria in the room? The ones we can't see but they exist in masses? We decided to investigate.
Every day, humans breathe up to 9,000 liters of air, and spend most of their time inside the home or office, that is, in closed spaces. If we focus for a moment on our home, we can name the polluting factors that we may not have thought to treat as harmful before. The sources of pollution are present in all aspects of daily life, whether it is pollutants emitted during cooking, or those released from cleaning products or continuous gas emissions of formaldehyde from new furniture we bought or parquet we installed on the floor.
These sources release pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, VOCs, NO2 and formaldehyde into the air (terms that don't mean much to us, but it certainly sounds like someone knows what they're talking about). Formaldehyde is a colorless gaseous pollutant that evaporates from furniture and wood products containing formaldehyde-based resins such as plywood, insulating materials and products such as paint, wallpaper and household cleaning products.
Due to its volume, which is 500 times smaller than 0.1 micron particles, it is difficult to detect and capture, which may lead to prolonged exposure to dangerous airborne chemicals. Recently, the Dyson brand, known to all of us as a manufacturer of high-quality vacuum cleaners and sought-after hair stylists, launched a series of formaldehyde filters with a new sensing technology to filter dangerous pollutants to create a safer and cleaner home environment.
To check on a scientific level, whether the Dyson filter actually cleans the air we breathe, it would be impossible for us to do, but we chose to test the accompanying features of the product for the guaranteed filtering action, and this, if we start from the premise that you trust the brand with an international name that communicates quality products.
According to the manufacturing company Dyson, its new formaldehyde filter series reflects the latest technology in three core areas: sensing, filtering and acoustics. Formaldehyde sensing technology is designed to capture extremely fine dust, allergens, and volatile organic compounds. The formaldehyde sensor works alongside the unique algorithm, for accurate monitoring of formaldehyde levels - while detecting other gases. The brand's engineers rebuilt the air flow paths of the filter, not only to ensure that air does not bypass the filter, but also to block potential leakage points through which contaminated air may enter the filter path.
This means that Dyson's new filters capture 99.95% of particles down to a size of 0.1 microns. In addition to the air filtering operation, the manufacturer promises that the new filter is 20% quieter and reduces unwanted noise in the home. Alex Knox, Vice President of Environmental Care at Dyson points out that: "The technology in the new filter provides accurate and successful sensing, which enables the capture and destruction of the pollutant. The Corona epidemic has raised global awareness of the air we breathe and Dyson's commitment to providing cleaner air through innovative technology."
The formaldehyde sensor's smart algorithm cross-references data every second, selectively sensing that differentiates between pollutants. Dyson engineers also invested in product development from the aspect of reducing the filter's sound output while maintaining the filter's performance. The filter was designed to be 20% quieter. To reduce noise, and the airflow path (the slot where the air exits the filter) has been reduced. Using Air Multiplier™ technology, the filter can release purified air to every corner of the room. Automatic mode allows the filter to maintain a preferred room temperature and air quality. Also, the filter can be fully controlled by an app.
We tested the Dyson Pure Cool Hot+cool Formaldehyde HP09 model, which combines an exit of cold air and hot air. Dyson air filter fans are designed to provide powerful and personal cooling. They are not designed to lower the temperature in an entire room like air conditioning.
Control and operation: In addition to the monitor with an LCD screen, a magnetic remote is attached that comes with the filter and attaches to the head of the filter using a magnet and prevents its loss. Using the control keys we can choose on/off, information about the air in the room before it is filtered, heating control, cooling control, air flow direction, sleep mode, air flow speed, automatic mode or sleep mode.
Remote control application: control and monitor the air quality from anywhere using the Dyson Link application. The noise: the noise intensity is significantly reduced (by about 20%) compared to previous models and also allows the filter to work at all hours of the day.
Filters: the device is built with layers upon layers of filters for almost complete filtering of bacteria and pollutants. The condition of the filters should be checked from time to time. The device will alert when cleaning is needed.
You can purchase a non-cleanable filter on the official brand website. Light sleep mode: noise is reduced even more than its normal state in order not to disturb the sleep of those present in the room, as well as dimmed monitor lighting.
The direction of the air flow: we can choose the direction of the air flow and the rotation of the device up to 350 degrees (almost a full rotation) the adjustment of the temperature: we can choose between cool air and hot air according to the temperature in the space and according to the desired temperature. The power of the clean air, which is released from the device after filtering the air in the room, is high enough to ventilate a room about 20 meters in size and sufficiently cool/heat the temperature.
The design: the meticulous, modern and designed appearance of the filter transmits innovation and the future, it is suitable for any space and will fit well among the various objects and furniture. It is hard to guess what function it fulfills (filtering, ventilation and heating) because it looks more like a clean-looking speaker or lamp from a quality brand.
In the Dyson filter series, 2 models: Dyson Pure Cool Formaldehyde TP09 air filter and fan.
The recommended price for the consumer: NIS 2,999. Model Dyson Pure Cool Hot+cool Formaldehyde HP09 air filter, fan and heater.
The recommended price for the consumer: NIS 3,360.
The prices, as you noticed, are high and it is difficult to understand whether and how much the product actually filters the air, but we can report that after 3 weeks of using the product, we felt a reduction in headaches, and a slight smell of dampness coming from the adjacent bathroom. In addition, we could give up a standing fan that was in the room (on the days when we preferred not to use the air conditioner) and a test of the hot air gives the impression that it will be able to heat our room sufficiently on the cool days.
As for the purchase, we will not be able to make the decision for you, and we assume that the degree of credibility we have in the brand may affect the decision to purchase it because if indeed the product completely filters (almost) pollutants in the air we breathe and thus contributes to our health, then there is no price for it - the deciding criteria They are mainly how deep our pockets are and how high our awareness is.
The Dyson filters come with a two-year warranty and service at the customer's home by B.N.Z.K Sahar, the official importer of Dyson products in Israel and can be purchased on the Dyson website
