As with every year, I sat down with countless bottles of Israeli wine, narrowing the list for Walla’s Rosh Hashanah 2024 recommendations. All wines on this list are local, a testament to the endurance of Israel's wine industry.

This holiday marks one of the two major events for Israel’s wine industry. Reflecting on what this past year has been for the industry, it's hard to believe it’s still standing, let alone thriving. Many of Israel’s vineyards, both large and small, are located in the conflict-ridden Upper Galilee, a region now synonymous with war.

Few words can capture what northern winemakers have endured. For many, their vineyards have been closed off as military zones, too dangerous for access. I still remember receiving a photo in the early weeks of the conflict—a large Galilee winery with armored vehicles stationed in its visitor center’s parking lot. It was surreal. So, a big shout-out to Israel’s wine industry, especially those in the Galilee, for persevering through what may have been the most challenging year in their history.

The following list does not claim to feature the best wines out there. Instead, it offers a bit of everything—varieties, styles, and price ranges—so every wine lover, from beginners to connoisseurs, can find a suitable bottle within their budget, from NIS 39 to NIS 189. Here’s hoping the next year brings peace and stability for the winemakers and grape growers of Israel. Wishing everyone a sweet and happy new year—L’chaim!
