After UN upgrade: UK calls on resumption of peace talks

The United Kingdom called on Israelis and Palestinians to promptly return to direct negotiations, speaking after Palestinian status at the UN was upgraded to non-member observer state Thursday night.Explaining that his country abstained in the vote because it was unable to secure certain assurances Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whom he described as "a courageous man of peace," UK envoy to the UN Mark Lyall Grant reaffirmed that the only way to achieve a two-state solution is through negotiations.He added that the UK looks to the United States to take the lead in coming months in order to restart negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
