China on Monday urged the United States not to escalate tension or take further action to harm China's interests in response to the shooting down of a suspected spy balloon that China said was an unmanned civilian airship that entered US airspace by accident.
"China firmly opposes and strongly protests against this," China's Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng said in remarks to the US embassy in China. "The Chinese government is closely following the development of the situation."
