The funeral of Hayim Katsman, a US citizen, peace activist, and academic who was murdered by Hamas terrorists on Saturday, will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Yarkon Cemetery in Petah Tikva.
The family will be sitting Shiva in Petah Tikva until Shabbat and in Jerusalem after Shabbat until Monday afternoon. From Monday afternoon until Thursday, the Shiva will return to Petah Tikva.
Katsman was murdered in his home in Kibbutz Holit, with a neighbor who was hiding with him saying that he shielded them and saving their life.
Katsman's mother, Hannah, grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father, Daniel, is from Seattle.
Katsman was a recipient of the 2018-2019 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship - an award provided to students to develop fluency in less commonly taught languages and expertise in the regions in which these languages are spoken - as well as the 2019 Kimmerling Award for Best Graduate Paper, among other accolades.
