Sergeant Yonatan Aharon Greenblatt passed after he was severely wounded a week ago, the military said on Sunday.
Sergeant Greenblatt, 21, was severely wounded by an anti-tank missile while fighting in the southern Gaza Strip as part of the Shaked Battalion of the Givati Brigade.
According to Walla, Greenblatt was a graduate of the Yeshivat Hesder Neve Dekalim and was from Beit Shemesh.
He was posthumously promoted from Corporal to Sergeant.According to Walla, Greenblatt's relative Eliav Turgeman said, "Yoni, a child of light and strength, a student of the Hesder yeshiva in Ashdod. Full of sweetness, a twin brother to our beloved Orel (a student of the yeshiva in Dimona), bravery gave his soul in the war.
"In the last week, the sky has been lit up by prayers for his recovery. We felt as if an entire nation stood up to give hope and connect with prayer for healing."
The mayor of Beit Shemesh, Shmuel Greenberg, paid tribute to him as well, KAN reported on Sunday.
"The residents of the city bow their heads and salute the hero who gave his life for our people and our homeland. Our hearts are broken. Our grief is immense and unimaginable," Greenberg said.
Fallen soldiers during the war
According to the IDF's tally, the death of Sergeant Greenblatt raises the total of soldiers killed on or since October 7 of last year to 689.
Some 329 of this number were killed since the start of the military's ground operations in the Strip on October 27.
