Talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage release deal have begun in Doha, an official briefed on the talks told Reuters.
White House Spokesman John Kirby confirmed talks had begun but added that the deal is not expected to be reached on Thursday. "Talks are expected to continue tomorrow. The differences can be overcome, and the negotiations must come to a conclusion as soon as possible," he said.
Israel's spy chief, David Barnea, is expected to join his US and Egyptian counterparts and Qatar's prime minister for the new round of talks.
