The IDF recently positioned an M61 Vulcan cannon on the northern border in an attempt to counter the drone threat in the area, Maariv reported on Sunday.

The Israeli Tamar Group produced the cannon.

In May, it was reported by Channel 12 that Israel was considering purchasing the cannon system from the US in an effort to expand its air defense against drones.

The cannon has six-barrels of 20mm each. It can shoot some 6,000 rounds per minute.

According to the report, the US used the system to protect the floating pier it had built in the Gaza Strip for humanitarian purposes.

The cannon was also previously used in Iraq by the US, Channel 12 noted.

Cannon used in Lebanon War

According to the IDF website, an older iteration of the cannon was first sent to Israel by the US during the Yom Kippur War and made operational during the First Lebanon War.

The cannon, which could be moved from place to place, was used during combat in Beirut in the First Lebanon War.

According to the IDF, in the first decade of the millennia, a decision was made to keep the Vulcan cannon within the air force.
