Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, criticized Police Commissioner Daniel Levi on the issue of the dismissal of the police legal adviser Dep.-Ch. Elazar Kahana in a letter published on Tuesday evening, and called the action unlawful.
"If you freeze the impeachment - you are acting against the law," Baharav-Miara said.
In the letter, Baharav-Miara reiterated the need to freeze the Police Commissioner's decision to dismiss Kahana.
The process of submitting applications for the position continues despite the Attorney General's directives and letter, N12 reported on Tuesday.
Baharav-Miara had written a similar letter last week, where she wrote that the decision to remove Kahana from his position was done in a speedy, unexplained, and potentially illegal procedure and was therefore frozen.
According to Baharav-Miara, Levi announced the decision to the police on Tuesday evening despite agreeing just hours earlier to hold off on the move until holding an organized meeting with her on the matter.
Responses to the letter
The Movement for Quality Government (MQG) supported the position of the Attorney General.
In a statement they wrote, "The Movement for Quality Government in Israel welcomes the firm and clear position of the Attorney General regarding the dismissal of the legal advisor to the Israel Police."
"The commissioner's claim that the Attorney General does not have the authority to freeze the dismissal is contrary to the law. When the head of the country's central law enforcement organization claims that he is not subject to the directives of the Attorney General, he is, in effect, declaring himself above the law," MQG wrote.
"This is dangerous conduct that requires judicial intervention if the commissioner does not comply with the Attorney General's directives."
"We will not allow the commissioner to harm the gatekeepers and turn the police into a political tool in the hands of the National Security Minister."
