Legislation providing an 'adjustment grant' to women leaving a battered women's shelter passed a preliminary reading in the Knesset Wednesday. The bill by Meretz chairwoman Zehava Gal-On adds to the existing grant giving to women by subsidizing career training and advisers, giving additional funds to those increasing their participation in the workforce, and providing them with a transitional apartment. The children of women leaving shelters would get priority placement in subsidized daycare. When the law passes, it is expected to apply to 650-700 women each year. 'We're working so women don't return to abusive men,' Gal-On said. 'Many women need this support and aid when they leave shelters.'
