East Jerusalem man accused of Eilat terror plot acquitted

An east Jerusalem man accused in 2015 of hatching a terror plot to bomb an Eilat hotel was acquitted by the Beersheba District Court on Thursday.

Halil Nimri was acquitted after his defense team raised a number of issues with the evidence against him. Despite his having confessed while interrogated by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) his lawyer argued that the confession was false and that a key witness identifying him as having acted suspiciously may have confused him with someone else.

There was no information about the status of the case against the second alleged co-conspirator, Ashraf Salaimeh.
The Justice Ministry said it was weighing appealing the decision, and that Nimri would remain in custody for 72 hours pending its decision.
