Education Ministry: School committee will determine benefits for the learning disabled

The Education Ministry announced that students with learning disabilities will no longer require professional certification to receive certain benefits in school, according to new guidelines released on Thursday.
One of the major facets of the new reform includes the establishment of a school committee that will, for the first time, decide what benefits to grant students with learning disabilities - without the students having to undergo external professional evaluation.
Among the benefits that will be automatically granted to students with learning disabilities include additional time for testing as well as computerized testing options.  If a student requires additional assistance in reading or writing or in taking oral examinations the school committee will evaluate the student's need on a case by case basis.
According to the ministry the new outline aims to increase the trust placed in educators and will allow teachers to better learn the needs and challenges facing each student. In addition, the ministry aims to save parents thousands of shekels required for evaluation by a trained professional.  The new guidelines are set to take effect for tenth grade students only during the current school year and the ministry plans to eventually expand the reform to encompass the entire educational system.
