Israel asks Belarus not to extradite Israeli blogger to Azerbaijan

Just days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returned from Azerbaijan, the Foreign Ministry turned to Belarus authorities and requested that they not extradite an Israeli blogger to Azerbaijan for visiting the disputed Nagorno Karabakh region and writing critically of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
According to Azerbaijani media reports, Alexander Lapshin was arrested in Minis at the request of Azerbaijan for illegally entering Nagorno Karabakh in 2011 and 2012, and that Baku is asking for his extradition.
Foreign Ministry officials in Jerusalem said that Israel has asked that its consul-general in Belarus be allowed to see Lapshin, and that Minsk not take any “irreversible measures” against him.
