Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on Monday suspended coalition partner and Deputy Mayor Haim Epstein, of the Haredi Bnei Torah party, for 30 days for his faction’s efforts to organize protests intended to disrupt last Friday’s Jerusalem Winner Marathon.Epstein and his ultra-orthodox constituents planned to demonstrate against the conscription law, which the haredi community deems antithetical to their values and beliefs, and has resulted in steady rioting in ultra-orthodox neighborhoods of the capital.Despite being contained by police, Barkat condemned Epstein’s actions as illegal, adding that it endangered the public welfare. “It is inconceivable to allow something like this to pass unchallenged,” said Barkat of the immediate suspension.
