Joe Biden announces all-female communications team

President-elect Joe Biden on Sunday tapped key campaign staff and advisers to lead his all-woman communications team, naming former Obama administration’s State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki as his White House press secretary and his campaign spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield as his communications director.Psaki served as a traveling press secretary to the Obama-Biden campaign in 2008 and 2012, and as deputy press secretary for John Kerry during his presidential bid in 2004. During the Obama administration, she served as the State Department spokeswoman, and later in the White House as communications director.Bedingfield, who served as deputy campaign manager and communications director during the Biden campaign, previously served as communications director for him while he was vice president.Senior campaign adviser Karine Jean Pierre will be the deputy White House press secretary.“I can’t imagine a smarter, savvier, better human to partner with than Jean Pierre to rebuild trust of the American people, communicate the Biden-Harris agenda and make the work of the US government more accessible to the people we will all serve,” Psaki tweeted.She added that the two had a conversation earlier on Sunday “about taking the next few weeks to think outside of the box about how to ensure we are making the Biden-Harris agenda more accessible from the podium.”Psaki tweeted that the communications team is the “most diverse team in history – and also 6 Moms of young kids.”Symone Sanders will be Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’s chief spokeswoman, while Elizabeth Alexander – Biden’s former press secretary when he was vice president – will be Harris’s communications director, the transition team announced on Sunday.Biden said in a statement that “communicating directly and truthfully to the American people is one of the most important duties of a president, and this team will be entrusted with the tremendous responsibility of connecting the American people to the White House.“I am proud to announce today the first senior White House communications team comprised entirely of women,” Biden said. “These qualified, experienced communicators bring diverse perspectives to their work and a shared commitment to building this country back better.”
