Knesset advances bill to fine prank-callers to emergency lines

The Knesset approved in a first reading Tuesday legislation that would fine someone who made a false call to an emergency hotline NIS 14,400.
The bill, proposed by Knesset Law, Constitution and Justice Committee chairman Nissan Slomiansky (Bayit Yehudi), and Zionist Union MKs Merav Michaeli and Omer Bar-Lev, would apply to anyone who called the police, firefighters, MDA or the security emergency hotline.
If the call led to the waste of actual resources, the fine would go up to NIS 75,600.
The initiative was inspired by the kidnapping of three teenage boys in Gush Etzion last summer. One of them called the police to say they had been abducted, but police did not act on the call until much later. One of the reasons given for the delay was that police receive many prank calls.
