Minister wants ‘safety net’ for Israel to build new space satellite

The Ministerial Committee on Science headed by Science, Technology and Space Minister Ofir Akunis decided on Sunday to recommend giving a “security net” to space industries to built a telecommunications satellite instead of the Amos 6.
A few weeks ago. the Israeli satellite exploded along with a defective rocket before it was supposed to be launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida. It is expected to take two years to build another satellite here.
Akunis said that the state should give a guarantee for purchasing the parts to shorten the production time from the moment a contract is signed until they arrive.
He also urged the government to declare that the building of communications satellites is a “national need.” He recently appointed a committee to set down national space policy, and on the basis of its recommendations, Akunis will present a budget proposal to the cabinet, he said.
