New York City Marathon canceled due to coronavirus

The 50th New York City Marathon, scheduled for Nov. 1, will not take place in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
City and race officials issued a joint announcement Wednesday instructing the 50,000 registered runners that the 2020 TCS New York City Marathon was canceled, the latest in a growing line of international road races called off due to COVID-19-related health concerns.
The race was most recently canceled in 2012 in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The marathon will now take place on Nov. 7, 2021.
Runners who had a paid and confirmed registration can defer to the same event any of the next three years or request a refund, Michael Capiraso of New York Road Runners told the New York Times.
"There was hope but that turned to uncertainty, and given what we have seen the past months this was really the only decision," Capiraso said.
White House officials have cautioned a second wave of the coronavirus could impact the United States this fall.
The Chicago Marathon has not yet been canceled and is scheduled to take place on Oct. 11. The 26.2 in London and the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington and Northern Virginia have also not been canceled.
