A veteran 78-year-old lawyer and activist has been detained by security agents, Syrian human rights organizations said Thursday.
In a joint statement, the eight groups said Haitham al-Maleh was summoned by security for unknown reasons on Wednesday and had not been seen since.
Al-Maleh was imprisoned from 1980 until 1986 after he demanded constitutional reforms. He was sentenced by a military court in 2006 to 10 years in prison for insulting a government employee.
Thursday's statement described al-Maleh's detention as "shocking" and called on Syrian authorities to release al-Maleh unconditionally.
