The IDF appointed a new Eilat Brigade commander, naming Col. Avi Dahan as the man who will take up the post this week.A ceremony to mark the changing of commanders was held in Eilat on Wednesday, in the presence of Southern Command chief Maj.-Gen. Sami Turgeman, and other senior southern commanders.Dahan took the place of Col. Roei Be’eri, who is to serve as the Home Front Command’s head of the Southern District.Speaking at the ceremony, Dahan said, “We’re in a most complex and challenging period, which confronts us with many operational needs aimed at defending Eilat.”The head of the 80th (Edom) Division, Brig.-Gen. Roei Elkabetz, observed that Eilat is Israel’s main tourism city, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, and forms a top economic, security and strategic asset.“As a result, defending Eilat and its surrounding communities is a mission of supreme importance,” he said.Be’eri said that the past year saw a build-up for military forces within the IDF’s Eilat Regional Brigade, accompanied by growing intelligence capabilities in the southern sector.
