The Iran-backed Houthis continued to escalate their attacks on February 19 with a new attack on a ship off the coast of Yemen. The Houthis claimed they struck the ship Rubymar off the coast. According to reports, a ship was attacked in the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The incident occurred around 35 nautical miles from the coast.

According to Arab News, “Yemen’s Houthis targeted the Rubymar cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, and it is now at risk of sinking, the group’s military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said in a statement on Monday. The ship is British, and the crew are safe, he said, adding the Houthis had also shot down a US drone in Hodeidah.”

QatarEnergy Chief Saad al-Kaabi said on Monday Red Sea shipping disruptions would limit the arrival of products to customers in the long term and that diversions were not ideal as they added to the cost and length of journeys.

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group has since November been attacking vessels in the Red Sea, part of a route that accounts for about 12% of the world's shipping traffic, in what they say is an effort to support Palestinians in the war with Israel.

QatarEnergy, one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas, said in January it had stopped sending tankers via the Red Sea on security concerns.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz, in an interview with Kan 11 on Monday, referenced restrictions requested by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir regarding prayers on the Temple Mount during Ramadan.

With special discussions held in the cabinet ahead of Ramadan, Ben-Gvir demanded to limit the prayer of Palestinians and Israeli Arabs on the Temple Mount. Katz said Monday morning “Those who proposed principled ideological restrictions will not have their position accepted. The instructions are very clear, to allow as many people as possible on the Temple Mount and avoid friction.”

The Biden administration is seeking to provide financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA), as its officials warn that it is rapidly running out of cash. The US administration hopes that the PA will be able to govern Gaza when the war in Gaza is over, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ)

The PA has warned that they will run out of money to pay salaries to government employees by the end of February. If the group runs out of money, the Biden administration is concerned that more extremist groups could take control of the West Bank.
