Unknown cyber hackers affiliated with the “Anonymous” hacking group said in recent weeks that they would attempt to hack a number of Israeli websites on Tuesday. They were true to their word and attempted to attack several web sites before dawn, with limited success.Israeli cyber authorities advised civilian Internet sites on defensive steps they should take, ahead of the threatened attack. The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and the National Cyber Defense Center, which is a part of the Prime Minister’s Office, passed on tips to civilian Internet sites on how to defend themselves. The Shin Bet is in charge of providing cyber defenses to areas of the Internet identified with critical infrastructure – sectors that have not been traditionally attacked by past waves of Anonymous attacks.Anonymous has stated that it intends to target Israeli sites to protest the country’s policies toward the Palestinians. The hackers claimed that they managed to temporarily shut down the official Knesset web site as well as the sites for the Israeli court system, yet the pages for these institutions continued to function normally.
