The 50-meter-high chimney next to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center (SZMC) which had been used to remove pollution from oil-based fuel, was replaced decades ago by clean power. But now, with the war against Gaza, it is serving a new purpose.
The hospital has joined the Jerusalem Municipality to attach giant, vertical flags on two sides of the rectangular chimney. They were installed on Thursday and can be seen from a considerable distance throughout the city.
The project was managed by Marom F.G.P. and their rappelling team who scaled the tower to ensure the safe installation of the flags.
Statements by the Jerusalem mayor and SZMC's director-general
Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion welcomed the initiative saying: “These giant flags that will fly from Shaare Zedek are a clear message to everyone who come through Israel’s capital that Am Yisrael Chai! We are strong and united, and we will prevail. These flags also serve as a symbol of our solidarity with the families of the fallen, injured, and hostages.
"We are constantly thinking of them and are doing everything possible to show our strong support. Through this spirit of mutual caring for one another, a spirit which defines Jerusalem, we will stand strong as one people and we will be victorious!”
SZMC’s director-general Prof. Ofer Merin added that “Israel stands in a very challenging time and our hospital is positioned to respond at all times to respond in all ways possible to provide the medical care that is needed as well as emotionally supporting our patients and their families. These flags, which can be seen throughout the city, project the spirit of our national strength and the message of unity.
"We know this will serve to convey our feelings of warm solidarity for the people of Jerusalem and Israel and I want to thank the mayor and the municipality who embraced this idea and worked together to bring this important initiative to fruition.”
