Israel Police officers from the Jerusalem District and Border Police officers worked on Sunday in the Bar-Ilan Street area of Jerusalem to restore public order amid haredi (ultra-Orthodox) protests in the city.

The protesters blocked the Jerusalem light rail route and nearby traffic arteries, disrupting public order and movement in the area, according to the police statement and Ynet.

A police officer declared the gathering a public disturbance and called on the protesters to clear the road, the statement said.

After demonstrators allegedly failed to comply with officers’ instructions, police and Border Police officers began working to restore order and reopen the road to the public.

One suspect arrested during light rail disruption

One suspect was arrested on suspicion of disturbing public order during the protest, police said.

Israel Police said it would continue to allow freedom of expression and lawful protest. However, police added that it would not permit a “blatant violation of public order” that harms freedom of movement.
