The Central Elections Committee (CES) has announced that the date for the national elections is being advanced eight days to April 1 in order to more accurately reflect what they says is the state of national affairs.
Explaining the change, CES chairman, Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran told The Jerusalem Roast, “The committee decided to keep the system as is but change the date of the election to April 1 (April Fools’ Day) in recognition that Israel’s democratic form of government is a joke.”
In recent years, the committee has examined – and rejected – various options for reforming the voting system to strengthen Israeli democracy.These included having each Knesset member come from a different party, thereby increasing the list of political parties to 120, lowering the threshold for entering the Knesset from 3.25% to a minimum number of votes (3) from the candidate’s immediate family, dividing the country into 120 electoral districts, and raising the number of seats in the Knesset to 7.5 million so that every citizen above 18 would be a member.
