Assaf Ramon, son of Col. Ilan Ramon, who himself died in the Columbia space shuttle disaster in 2003, was commemorated on Tuesday during a military remembrance ceremony marking the 30-day anniversary of his death.
"For a whole month I've been seething and shouting - how could I have failed to save you?" Assaf's mother, Rona Ramon, said during the ceremony. "I was powerless. I'm frustrated, and I'm forced say goodbye."
Ramon's girlfriend, Adi Magen, delivered a deeply heartfelt eulogy for the young pilot.
"The time has passed like eternity," she said. "The longing doesn't stop for a second."
"I'm asking you to watch over us, to give us infinite strength," Magen continued. "You were the best gift I could ever have asked for."
Ramon was killed mid-September when the IAF F-16 fighter jet he had been piloting went down in the Southern Hebron Mountain.
Roughly 200 friends, family, air force personnel, and others were gathered at the remembrance ceremony, which took place at a military cemetery in Nahalal.
