Sarah Palin sports Star of David necklace during NY visit
Former Republican vice presidential candidate tells news station she was wearing the Magen David in honor of Jerusalem Day.

Palin, who visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Wednesday with her daughter Piper, told NBC New York that she was wearing the Star of David in honor of Jerusalem Day, which marks the city’s reunification under Israeli sovereignty during the Six Day War in 1967.Observers have suggested that she wore the necklace in order to drum up support among Jewish New Yorkers for a possible 2012 bid for president.RELATED:Sarah Palin arrives in Israel, set to meet Netanyahu Palin, Trump don’t excite Jewish Republicans Palin, who ran unsuccessfully for vice president as John McCain's running mate in 2008, visited Washington, Maryland and Pennsylvania this week before arriving in New York.Palin caused a stir in March when she wore a Star of David around her neck during a brief visit to Israel, which included a visit to the Western Wall and a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Early last month, conservative New Jersey political analyst Alan Joel Steinberg speculated that Palin "would get substantial Orthodox Jewish support and among right-wing Zionists" if she decides to run for the US presidency.The former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate recently stopped in Israel on her way back from giving a speech in India, and met with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
