Ben-Gvir's comments to Shabtai come just days after the national security minister received approval for his prized new national guard force.
Ben-Gvir said that the force would focus on combating “extortion in areas with criminal organizations and ‘mixed’ cities,” a clear implication of focusing on Israeli-Arab crime.
During a speech at the Knesset plenum about the so-called Deri Law 2, Amsalem had addressed some of the controversies surrounding law enforcement interactions with judicial reform protesters.
"Everything we warned of is happening," Yesh Atid MK and former senior police official Yoav Segalovitz said.
A new poll revealed that 41% of Israelis wanted Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz to join the government to stop judicial reform legislation.
Shabtai has already proven to be weak in the two months since Ben-Gvir took up his role as the minister in charge of the police, and things need to change.
Apology comes day after AG questions legality of move
A conversation took place between the Tel Aviv district commander Eshed and police chief Shabtai, after Eshed was dismissed from his post.
According to Itamar Ben-Gvir's office, the appointment is routine and not a targeted demotion.
Ben-Gvir clarified his position ahead of the planned protests on Saturday and reiterated that he, not the police commander, decides the policy.
