Within days, Biden went from the party's figurehead to a liability. He became the first sitting president to stand down from a possible reelection since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968.
"Will her race and gender be an issue? Absolutely," said LaTosha Brown, a political strategist and co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund.
Biden, 81, has faced increased calls to step down after his performance during a debate with former president Donald Trump.
Although he has been out of office for nearly eight years, Obama still has a significant influence within the Democratic party.
After joining presidents who survived assassination attempts, Trump can now make history as a president who learned that a country out of control with violence needs a gentler hand to lead it.
"This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. The speech will be a lot different, a lot different than it would've been two days ago," Trump told the press.
