Jenin is a major Palestinian city in northern West Bank, with population of at least 49,000. Located in Area A of the West Bank, it is under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority.
It contains the Jenin refugee camp, a densely-populated Palestinian refugee camp with a population of around 11,000-22,000 people, according to differing sources and estimates.
The rising death toll in the clashes could continue to get worse but it could also hint at the PA’s resolve to finally deal with the growing problems in Jenin.
The terrorists reportedly attempted to stop the security forces from entering the refugee camp.
"The operation in Jenin is proceeding too slowly and on too small a scale. It is mostly defensive rather than offensive," the Israeli message read.

Israeli security forces conducted operations in the areas of Jenin and Qabatiya in the West Bank, eliminating terrorists and explosives labs.
The IDF also arrested a number of wanted persons, located weapons, and destroyed an explosives laboratory.
During the operation, the troops unearthed explosive devices, a gun, and numerous weapons and destroyed explosives that had been positioned on routes.
Last week, the IDF eliminated the Hamas branch head Jenin.
IDF operations in Tubas and Far'a resulted in the elimination of Muhammad Zakaria Zubeidi and several other terrorists and the discovery of explosives under roads.
“The current operation in the West Bank is made in the provision of a possible scenario of bigger terrorist attacks in the future, Dr. Colonel (res.) Moshe Elad said.
