The High Court of Justice ordered the government to approve the appointment of Shimon Baron as director-general of the Justice Ministry on Thursday after months of the position not being permanently filled.
Baron was appointed in late August by Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn. However, due to the coalition agreement, no high-level appointments could be made for the first 100 days after its establishment. Since then, his appointment has since been stalled due to coalition disagreements.
The appointment should be brought "in the proper pace," the court said in an injunction, which it said meant by the end of the month
The Attorney-General's Office asked for the court to demand that the appointment be made by the end of the month.
The Movement for Quality Government had asked for the appointment to be made sooner in order to preempt the dispersal of the Knesset.
After the Knesset is dispersed, it is unlikely that the appointment would be permitted.
One possibility is that Blue and White will appoint the Justice Ministry director-general and Likud appoint a police inspector-general before the Knesset is dispersed.
