Longtime 'Post' editor, journalist Matt Nesvisky dies

Former Jerusalem Post editor and longtime Jerusalem Report contributor Matt Nesvisky died Wednesday night in the US after a short illness. He was 75 old.Nesvisky, a Philadelphia native, moved to Israel in the 1970s and lived here for 20 years. He served in the IDF and fought in an artillery unit in the Golan Heights.For 16 years Nesvisky was a senior editor, chief of copy desk, cultural reporter and feature writer at the Post. He was also editor of the newspaper's Weekend Magazine and wrote The Fifth Column, a weekly satirical essay.He went to be a contributing editor at The Jerusalem Report, even after moving back to Philadelphia in the late 1990s.As a freelance writer Nesvisky published nearly 900 articles in the US and abroad in such publications as The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Economist, The New York Daily News and The World Journalism Review.Utilizing a gruff persona to mask a heart of gold, Nesvisky often used biting humor to make prescient points.He frequently wrote about one of his passions, jazz, under the pseudonyms Madeleine L. Kind and Les Berfield.Nesvisky taught journalism at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, and in 2008, wrote a book, Covering Your Campus.He is survived by his wife Linda, and two daughters and grandchildren.
