Netanyahu's wife Sara called the president as well and offered her condolences on the passing of Sonia Peres.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak also expressed sadness at Peres's death and appreciation of her life.
"Sonia Peres was a special woman and person. She was a symbol of modesty, simplicity and love of her fellow man. She made sure to stay away from the spotlight and keep her life private. She constantly helped those in need; everyone who knew her appreciated her. May her memory be blessed," said Barak.
Peres died earlier on Thursday at the age of 87 in her Tel Aviv apartment. She leaves behind her husband and three grown children, Tzvia, Yonatan and Nehemiah.
