In this episode, actress Diane Neal shares the deeply personal journey that brought her from Hollywood to Israel — in the middle of war.
Best known for her roles on Law & Order: SVU, NCIS and Suits, Neal spent more than two decades in television. But in late 2021, after the death of her father during the Omicron wave of COVID-19, her life began to shift in a profound way. Her mother, devastated by the loss after 54 years of marriage, fell into deep depression. What started as an attempt to lift her mother’s spirits turned into a bold idea: make aliyah together.
Neal arrived in Israel in October 2022, becoming an official citizen in March 2023. She came, she jokes, with nothing more than a carry-on suitcase. But just as she returned to the United States in September 2023 to organize her belongings, October 7 changed everything. Her flight back to Israel was repeatedly canceled.
Weeks later, her mother was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
In the episode, Neal reflects on the painful timing — and what she sees as divine intervention. Had she already been in Israel, she might not have been able to care for her mother during her illness. Now, as her mother remains in the US battling multiple cancers, Neal has returned to Israel once again — arriving amid renewed regional escalation.
Today, Neal serves as a special envoy and ambassador for aliyah with the Aliyah and Integration Ministry. She speaks candidly about the bureaucratic challenges of immigration, the financial and personal sacrifices, and the stark contrast between life in the United States and life in Israel.
“Life in Israel isn’t easy,” she says in the episode. “But it’s worthwhile.”
Throughout the conversation, Neal discusses faith, resilience and what she describes as a shift in priorities that only existential crises can bring. War, she argues, clarifies what matters.
