The hijacking of the Ruen was the first successful takeover of a vessel involving Somali pirates since 2017 when an international crackdown stopped seizures in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.
The ship sent a message on the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations portal saying five to six unknown armed personnel had boarded on the evening of January 4, the Indian navy statement said.
